IN a move which somewhat contradicts the allegations of past neglect by Villajoyosa Council in their lack of efforts to eradicate the red weevil from the town’s public areas, this coming Saturday will see the handing out of saplings by the town hall, to support Valencia region’s “Arbor (Tree) Day” which was celebrated on January 31.

Villajoyosa’s Department of Environment is looking to give away some 5,800 specimens of native trees in total.

“The distribution of trees in the Mercat is one of the most accepted environmental activities in the locality. But we not only raise awareness one day a year, but that the City Council work for the protection of nature and environmental education throughout the year with activities such as reforestation of La Robella, the Mas de la Monja or a day’s forest clearance, involving both institutions and individual citizens, “said Jose Maria Bejar.

The process will start at 11am this Saturday and the the Mayor of Villajoyosa, Jaime Lloret, and Councillor for the Environment, Jose Maria Bejar will be present to give away the first specimens.

Another objective of this environmental activity, which has been repeated every year for the celebration of Arbor Day, is that “residents can plant these saplings in their farms or in municipal forests and so become aware of the damage they can pose to the environment with plants that are not born naturally in our area. This is why native species are given.” stressed Sr. Bejar.
