NGO leaders and council figures announce funding for bicycles and eye health in Guinea Bissau
BALEARIC political parties are joining the campaign initiated in the Valencian Region against the Governments decision to authorise hydrocarbon exploration in the channel between the Levante and Balearic coastlines. The Partit Socialista de Mallorca-Entesa Nacionalista (PSM-EN) has submitted an amendment to the social economic law which calls for an authorization repeal, according to Senator Pere Sampol.
President Antich expressed concern that the survey off the Valencian coast may also affect Mallorca.
“We cannot afford a season without tourists, which could be a reality if tar stains our beaches,” explained Senator Sampol.
It is believed that the oil exploration and drilling could have negative consequences for the environment, the fishing industry as well as tourism.
The Spanish Government apparently awarded the Cairn Group two hydrocarbon exploration licences in the Gulf of Valencia which cover 3,992 square meters in five adjacent blocks in 50 to more than 1,000 meters of water.
However, Deputy Minister Manuel Chavez went on record stating that in order to undertake exploration, “a special environmental permit” would be necessary, and this is “unlikely to be forthcoming”.
