80% of Japanese cancel Costa holiday plans

EIGHTY per cent of trips to the Costa del Sol booked in Japan have been cancelled due to the devastating effects of the earthquake, the Travel Agents Business Association (TABA) reports. Japanese tourists account for 5 to 6 per cent of the total number of foreign visitors to the Costa del Sol annually.

Meanwhile, 100 per cent of trips planned by Costa del Sol residents to Japan have also been cancelled, according to TABA.

The Spanish authorities advise that only necessary trips be made to Japan.

Japanese tourists who were in Andalucia at the time of the disaster have returned home, and the only Japanese who remain are long-term residents.

Meanwhile, the Malaga branch of Fujitsu, located on the Guadalhorce Industrial estate, has reported that the tsunami may affect its possibilities of dispatching components to clients throughout Europe, as they only have enough in stock to continue production for one month.
